!#$%!#$%@#$ signs of Spring

March 9, 2006

I was walking the dog this morning and out of the corner of my eye, I saw something hopping through the yard.

A robin.
Two robins.

These obnoxiously cheerful birds are supposed to be the first sign of Spring in Wisconsin.

All winter long, we have bitchy cardinals, disgruntled sparrows, and occasional insomniac owls. I have no idea if the mourning doves stick up here for winter, but the clinically depressed moaning in the tree tops is certainly appropriate to the weather.

Today, we had dense fog followed by cold drizzle.
And robins.

Generally, robins are the first sign that we’re due for one more cold snap, and perhaps a storm. The robins go north, and the warming trend goes south, and the stupid birds will be sitting out in the frozen tree branches, soaking up the icy rain and wondering what the hell happened.

If you like Schadenfreude…
